OUR PENNILESS WRITE

Contributors   About

We aim to foster experimentation in writing. We believe traditional structures of writing can be restrictive and we encourage those who do not adhere to the tried, tested and, therefore, validated conventions of literature and art writing. We want to experience new writing without relying on our preconceptions and expectations of established genres. There are no deadlines for submissions. The only criteria is that submissions be under 3,000 words (or up to 10 images for visual essays). Submissions can be sent to ourpennilesswrite@gmail.com

"Dark Shadows Prevail, Dark Anger Surrounds"
    by Kenneth W Allan

Fearless characters of hieroglyphic illuminations perform a frenzied orchestra of rage and anger. Thundering screams and beckoning cries crescendo in an arena of diffused light. Powerful blackening threats redeem themselves as heroic Trojan warriors, slaying each tormentor into a black abyss. Chariots crash in deserted subways, venomous snakes strike in the hallways, red raging Pamplonica bulls fall off the sidewalks, thundering carriages run every alley, spear headed unicorns fight for direction. Love and war harbour no deserters, violent screams echo from the prairie, blood crazed leeches suck all existence, demented wild dogs bark in the doorways, silhouetted blind men cry out of madness, laughing hyenas scream with excitement. Fallen leaves float all around us.

Black is black, no colour for a rainbow, black strikes fear, and nobody loves her, black stark night smoother the horizon. Gigantic waves crash the sleeping; screaming souls flee to newborn pastures. White towering mountains reverberate with danger, snow will fall to all those beneath her, cascading avalanches, they are a coming, no sailors sail, stars they are a fallen. God strikes fear to those who are listening. Nobody listens, but all are saviours.

Electrifying dynamics pierce through soulless arteries, sprawling limps struggle to protect her. Shelter and food draw travelling pilgrims. Tormentors battle against her resilience, her heart is strong and she will rebut them. All who enter will sleep with the healer; all who enter will be protected. Sleep brings comfort to all those around her.

And, as the raging black disperses to forgotten shores, stars ignite. Victorious once more, a triumphant city closes her weary eyes and dreams of untouched golden sands, forests of fruit, oceans of blue, harvest of yellow and meadows of green. Try as you have, attacker, to destroy her posture, subdue her stance, her soul is intact, her foundations remain firm, her knowledge unquestionable. As sleeping dormant reflects wandering skies, you, my destroyer, seek refuge on weaker neighbouring skies. Sleep little sister sleep, you have protected.

And as the finale draws to a close, I applaud the curtained storm. You rudely awakened me with a symbolic master class of thunder and lightening, a splendid requiem of bellowing cathedral skies, but now your anger is distant, and I too, must rejoice in sleep.

Tomorrow will bring new colours, colours of the rainbow. Goodnight dark blackness, I dream in colour.
